Twenty First Century CharterCameron Butland Cameron Butland was born in London and after school studied for an archaeology degree. Cameron worked in the City of London for two reinsurance brokers – Glanvill Enthoven and C T Bowring. He trained at Oxford University before being ordained in the Church of England in 1984. Starting in a Team Parish in Wolverhampton, Cameron has been a priest in five parishes in Oxfordshire and Cumbria. In addition he has worked as a Hospital Chaplain at the Horton General Hospital, Banbury and was Rural Dean of West Oxfordshire for seven years. Over the past thirty years Cameron has had a great interest in spirituality and especially how everyday life relates to a religious sense. In 1984 Hodder and Stoughton published ‘Work in Worship’, an anthology of prayers and readings. From 1990 to 2005 he published an annual diary of daily prayers under the title, ‘Our Daily Bread’. He is presently on the committee of Cumbria Christian Meditation, which is part of the World Community of Christian Meditation based on the tradition of the ‘prayer of the heart’ from St Anthony of Egypt to John Main. In Wolverhampton Cameron was a tutor on the Diocesan training course as well as being a School Governor. He is presently in his twenty fifth year as a School Governor with his four school, having served as Chairman for nine of these years. In the Oxford Diocese he taught on the St Albans and Oxford Ministry Course, as well as mentoring the third year curates. Presently he is a tutor with the Lancashire and Cumbria Training Partnership teaching history and is a speaker on the Celtic Church and Celtic Spirituality. Cameron has worked in many multicultural situations and has worked to build bridges between those of different faith backgrounds. He has been a founding member of several inter and multi faith groups, in Wolverhampton and Banbury. He has also worked for a greater understanding between Christian denominations and has chaired three different Churches Together groups. Presently he is a co-founder and Secretary of the Cumbria Interfaith Forum and has set up a Local Ecumenical Partnership in Grasmere. As well as being parish priest of Grasmere and Rydal in Cumbria, he is a Board member of Rydal Hall as well as Chaplain to Rydal Community. His role in Grasmere and Rydal means a close working relationship with other groups working in Cultural Tourism, including the Wordsworth Trust. He is co-author with Professor David Jackman of the Twenty First Century Charter and the New Chartism Movement. |
